Exploring Origine - A Journey Through Timeless Design

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Origine, a contemporary studio nestled in Cremorne, Melbourne, that acts as a curator of a visual language expressed through timeless designs in furniture, objects, lighting, and rugs. This charming space is a real treasure, boasting incredible objects and designs hailing from Italy, Portugal, India, Amsterdam, and even Colombia. As we wandered through the rooms, it became evident that Origine masterfully blends different design styles to create perfect harmonious settings. Our eyes were particularly drawn to three exceptional pieces on this room - the Tryst Chandelier, the Talisman Vase, and the Charlotte Table.

The Tryst Chandelier by Paul Matter, a design studio from New Delhi, is a masterpiece that seamlessly fuses tradition with experimentation. This chandelier marries a timeless visual language with materials that only grow more refined with age.The Talisman Vase, designed by Sam Baron, pays homage to the Carnavale rituals. It's not just a vase; it's a sonorous guardian, designed to ward off demons and ensure bountiful harvests. Crafted in collaboration with ceramicist Walter Usai, this exquisite piece includes hand-shaped bells used during Carnevale, all meticulously handmade in Italy.

The Charlotte Table, a creation by Collector, is a celebration of solid form and turned wood. It appears as if its elegant shape was born in a single, graceful gesture, as if a massive block of wood twirled on a lathe. Handmade in Portugal, this table exudes nuanced details, from the patterned top to the segmented wood or the introduction of marble. What's more, you have the privilege of selecting your preferred finish, from a choice of marble, walnut, and oak.

Our adventure continued as we explored a corridor, where the Wired Stool (you can barely see it on the right hand side) by Michael Young made its debut. This delightful and versatile stool, crafted with steel wire in a matte finish, pays homage to Harry Bertoia's iconic design. The organic shapes suggest the veins of a leaf, with sharp angles softened to evoke tranquillity. A comfy and lightweight stool, it's perfect for both indoor and outdoor settings.Moving to another enchanting space, we encountered three pieces by Sebastian Herkner, all of which employed the "Momposino" weaving technique. The CIELO lounge chair, a creation by Sebastian Herkner for Ames, caught our eye. Crafted from PVC strings made from recycled plastic, this chair is stretched over a galvanized and powder-coated steel frame, handwoven to perfection.

Inspired by the vibrant colors of Colombia's nature, cities, and garments, Sebastian Herkner designed the joyful Caribe chairs, benches, and tables. It's a beautiful celebration of Colombian techniques showcased on the other side of the world. (How exiting) 🤩...

Our journey led us to the Bogdan bench, a creation by studiointervallo based in Milan. It's clear that the overall goal of studiointervallo is simply “to make people happy”, and we can say they succeeded in doing just that. The bench, born from a single trunk of linden wood, with its unique colored decoration on the circumference, was truly captivating. At Origine, you can discover it in both red and blue color.

But the pièce de résistance had to be The Chubby Chair, Crafted from 10kg of recycled fridge interiors (yes, you read that right!), it's a testament to the power of recycled materials and the magic of uncontrollable factors, like temperature and calcium content. The result is an exciting variation that's found a place in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the MoMA, Design Museum London, and the National Museum in Oslo. Suffice to say, we've set our hearts on owning one of these remarkable chairs.
